Danish Week: Introducing: Oh Land

Nanna Øland Fabricius, or as the world knows her, Oh Land, is probably the biggest new star to come from Denmark. The Copenhagen singer has been reciving lots of hype this past months, including a series of VEVO videos and many music sites appearences. I like to say I knew her before all this hype happened and I regret not including her on the MDS Sound of 2011 when I spotted her! A former ballet dancer, which  is a really  a big influence for her music, Oh Land has released two albums to date. A small independent album titled Fauna, and her major eponymous debut, which was released on March 14, 2011 by Epic. With her quirky, almost shy voice, she has created a really unique sound which is a great addition to any music library. Her best song to date is probably "White Nights" which not only feature incrediblly sweet vocals but also amazing lyrics, and that happens throughout her entire album. You may wonder why I kept her for last, well, best for last, right?

Two of the girls found themeselves on the B2 last week. Tania Christopher and Jessica Mougin were announced to had recived the least amounts of votes. Following a judges votation, where Ed refused to vote for any of his acts ala Cheryl Cole, the three remaining judges decided to eliminate diva belter Tania. With a nostalgic sound that trasnsports the listener back in time, this Aarhus singer has been compared to Tracy Chapman, Bob Dylan and even Leonard Cohen in her almost 10 years of carrer, both in Denmark where she's recognized by her real name, and outside the country, where fans call her Tina Dico. Her latest album, "Welcome Back Color" was released on September 24, 2010 and is probably her greatest album to date. With 27 songs, which include a some of her biggest radio-hits, 5 new songs and new acoustic recordings, the album is bound to succed, after all, with 27 songs, there must be something for everyone. She's got the fun, the sad, the deep, the dramatic. But still, every song has something in common, Tina's incredible voice. She's got this timeless sound, well nostalgic fits it too, but the fact is that her voice is amazing today, would've been amazing and will be amazing, that won't change, Tina's musical talent will always be praised and it will never get old.

Danish Week: Introducing: Stine Kinck

Pop newcomer, Stine Kinck is one of Denmark's rising stars. With a recent participation on the Danish Melodi Grand Prix, which wasn't too successful (she came 10th out of 10), and the release of her eponymous album, Stine is surely gaining hype. Probably not the greatest voice, a bit generic indeed, but she's got something special. I'm not sure what it is.  I found her interesting and I'm really liking her music. Maybe she can be the Danish Kesha? Well, of course she's better and she's a deeper artist, as we've seen on her music videos, which use a really characteristical style, really different from what we'll commonly see on pop starts.

American Idol 2011: Top 7 Perform: Songs From the 21st Century

UPDATE: Stefano Langone is cut!!! YES!!! Finally America! B3 were Jacob and possibly Haley, but I don't think she was, Ryan made it really confusing. I guess it was a B2 only.

Finally! The first guy was cut last week! Still, it wasn't the right guy. Paul McDonald was eliminated in a non surprising result show when he saw himself with Stefano Langone in the B2. Paul was definitely one of the most entertaining and unique contestants this season while Stefano was tad boring as always. Tonight, the remaining contestants perform Songs From the 21st Century! Danish Week: Introducing: Aura Dione

Born in Copenhagen, this Danish/Spanish/French young singer has always had music in her life. The daughter of gypsy fathers, Aura wrote her first song at the age of 8, and she hasn't stopped since then. Her first song, "Something From Nothing", debutted in 2007, while her album, Columbine, was released on January 28, 2008 and charted #3 and certified Gold on Denamrk. Her gypsy roots really show on her music and style. She's got that folky sound, with many gypsy beats. And you all know that I love gypsy sounds! But it's not the gypsy you'll imagine, Aura's sound is definitely gypsy but it has a certain sophistication, like an special quirkiness and elegance, which really works with her voice. Aura Dione is surely having another album out soon, well, after her caravan comes back!

Music Video: Clare Maguire: The Shield And The Sword

It's no mistery that Clare is my favourite new artist this year. She blew me away with her first single, she made me go nuts with her second and I'm sure I'll go completely insane with this one! "The Shield and The Sword" is not only my favourite track from her deubt "Light After Dark" but it's also Clare's to be third single. The gorgeous music video premiered on April 19, 2011 and it's as amazing as you could imagine. A bit wierd and not exactly related to the song lyrics but Clare is just beautiful so I can't say anything bad about this, not saying it is at all.

After reciving three Danish Music Awards for her debut album, Ducks and Drakes in 1998, there was no doubt that Randi Laubek was becoming one of Denmark's brightest stars. Four albums after and that first prediction became true. Randi's one of the best voices I've heard in this whole theme week. It's a mixture of jazz and a big soulish husy voice, plus, she has great lyrics to support that. Her voice is distinguishable, I'll  immediately know it's her if I heard her on the radio and that's exactly why she's so great! She's unique and different from any artist in the market. Hailing from Copenhagen, the once member of the successful band Dizzy Mizz Lizzy, Tim Christensen, is making a name of it's own since the band's break up in 1998. With three albums to date and one more in the making, all of them which charted 9th, 1st and 2nd respectively, Tim could easily be defined as one of Denmark's biggest singer/songwriters in the acoustic pop/folk genre. His music shares comparissons to artists such as Jason Mraz and John Mayer but what I like about Tim is that his music creates a dark feeling in me, like a melancholic and sad atmosphere, but in a good way I mean, maybe it's his low, almost gravelly voice or maybe it's because of the instruments he uses. Still, Tim's music is really unique and shouldn't be ignored.

And despite her performance on the DMGP is the only one I've seen, and the only song of hers I've heard, I still believe this girl will have a great future, because you don't hear a voice like that everyday!  She's got that quirky high-pitched tone, which almost feels breaking, that I just love. Danish Week: Introducing: Caroline Henderson

Site HERE.
MySpace HERE.

If Cæcilie Norby is one of Demark's jazz icons, Caroline Henderson is the swedish one. Swedish? Yes, she was born in Sweden. So why adding her in a Danish Week? Well, her success has been in Denmark, plus she's half danish. In 1989, she came into the spotlight as part of the group Ray Dee Ohh. After the band disbanded, she went solo, releasing her first album "Cinemataztic" on 1995, which spawned two hits, "Made in Europe" and "Kiss Me Kiss Me". Then she released 9 more albums, being "Keeper of the Flame" the latest, released on October 26, 2009. Caroline's music is not strictly jazz. Her soulish voice clearly step her apart from some of jazz cliches, such as slow soft songs. For instance, "Kiss Me Kiss Me" is a song full of funk which shows a raspy big tone in Caroline's voice. Maybe a better classification for her would be funk jazz, or just funk, cause that's what I feel when I hear to her.

Cæcilie Norby is probably Diana Krall's danish counterpart. Born in Frederiksberg, on September 9, 1964, the daughter of a composer and an opera singer, Cæcilie is danish gem when talking about jazz. She started her carrer in 1985, fronting the band Frontline and then taking part in One Two, from 1986 to 1993. On 1995, she released her debut album and since then, she has released 7 albums, the latest one titled Arabesque which was released on October 4, 2010. Jazz in it's more pure form, Cæcilie's sound is a terapeutic one, one that will instantly relax you with her sweet soft tone and her perfect pitch in every note. She's probably one of the best jazz singers I've heard because she's not only a perfect singer, the type that worries for every note, as she shows on "The Dead Princess", but she's also something fresh, maybe the instruments that accompany her or maybe it's the way she  comunicates her lyrics, either way, Cæcilie is an amazing addition to any jazz library, she's already on mine ...

We all remember Miss Waissel from last year's XF and how could we forget about her? She was undoubtely the most controversial contestant on the show's history and her name popped on the papers faster than a lighting. Well, now she's once more on them. But it ain't a controversy now. It's all about her music. Katie, who was previously linked to Chamberlain Records, has been the first S7 contestant to release an album, the eponymous release came out on March 14, even before the winner, Matt Cardle. When we first met Katie, she named Etta James as one of her biggest influemces, much to the judges surprise, but it all makes sense now!

Alice Rose is probably one of the most intriguing acts of this theme week. Born in Copenhagen, Alice has been in the music scene since 2006, when she released her first album, "Tales of sailing", followed by "Mora with the Golden Gun". Not only she has an amazing style but she also has a beautiful voice. She's got a mesmerizing almost silky sound. It's jazzy, it's indie, it's folky, all that I love in a female singer. Now, Alice is engaging in a new project, "21 Days" in which she's released a song a day for 21 days, preceded by the release of a music video, "Into My Heart", a retro inspired love song with a twist. Having heard those songs, there's no doubt it'll be a success. Haunting vocals that will catch you since the first note.

Formed in Aarhus in 1996 and signed to Copenhagen Records and with five albums released, Nephew has seen lots of success due to their original lyrics which mix English and Danish, and the result ain't bad at all! It actually works perfectly! They have a Depeche Mode vibe going on and afterall, they are their biggest influence. Simon Kvamm fronts them and we could say that this band's popularity is all thanks to him given that he had a really popular stint on a danish comedy show which helped boosting their second album, USADSB, sales, which certified it double platinum. I must admit that the lead's voice isn't the most unique one but what I really like about this band is their originality. Their lyrics are great and I love the idea of a rock band singing in both languages. Plus, all this together sounds amazing!

The single is stated for May 22 but in the meantime you can buy the complete album! Or just watch the video! Jessie is also going the wierd route, following Lady Gaga's and Katy Perry's steps. Have you ever wondered what would have become of Lady Gaga if she was half chilean and half danish? Well, probably not but she'll probably be Medina. Born Andrea Fuentealba Valbak in Aarhus, this RnB/dance godess has certainly made an impact in the european world! Her debut album, "Welcome  to Medina" was certified double platinum in Denmark, charting #2, and then also charting in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Signed by Parlophone, EMI and Ultra Records, there's no doubt that she's talented, the question is, will she ever be able to outsell the likes of Lady Gaga, Katy Perry or Rihanna? The odds are certainly against her but she may get really near if not tie them because Medina is not your typical dance star wannabe. Nabiha Bensouda, or just Nabiha as most people know her, is one of the newest danish singers who's making a great impact inside and outside the country. Her debut album, "Cracks", released on February 1, 2010  has since earned her rave reviews and many prizes, such as the Danish Music Awards and a P3 Guld., with her first single, "Deep Sleep" peaking to #5 in the danish charts. Her strong african roots definitely show in this single. The  middle-8  is an African- and French-language lullaby from Mali, which her mother sang to her when little. Her lyrics mix deepness and fun, which creates a great musical concept. Nabiha has created a cool retro sound with funk and RnB beats that not only show her own musical identity but it also helps her stand out from the rest of the pack. After all, you don't find an african-danish retro singer every day.

Rikke Lie is back! The amazing singer returns to the spotlight with her new single, "Better Off", which is taken from her upcoming album expected for later in the year. The single, which was released on March 25, 2011 via Universal, is a heartfelt slow ballad which deals with probably the most written theme in music, love. And despite the repetitive theme, Rikke makes it feel brand new and fresh, in the way only she cans. It showcases her beautiful childish restrained voice perfectly and the beauty in it really shows. This is probably even better than her great first single, "Good Girl" (HERE), because it really focuses on her voice and the message. Props for Rikke! This will be an amazing album!

Sarah: First Single, Min øjesten

Last week, Sarah was announced the 4th winner of the XF Denmark in one of the most epic result shows yet. The 15 year old lesbian defeated Annelouise by a small margin of less than a 1%, to be precise, a 0,4%, still it was a deserved win. Now, Sarah has a record deal with Sony Music and will start recording her debut album. Her first single, "Min Øjesten" was released just after she was crowned the winner and now it's #1 on the danish charts!. I certainly like her recorded version more than the one she performed on the finale. I still prefer Annelouise's more emotional rendition but this song seems to fit Sarah perfectly. Nine years later, in 2000, they became a success in Denmark, winning 6 awards at the Danish Music Awards. And it all went uphill since then. Now, with 7 albums under their sleves, they are one of the most iconics bands of Denmark with 3 #1 albums, all consecutively. They may be danes take on The Script, great emotional lyrics and a really soulish acoustic voice. I'm digging this band a lot! This amazing singer has just released her newest and first EP, titled "Strictly Business", today, April 1! Considering how talented she is, there's no surprise in the EP being so great! It features five pop/rock songs full with attitude and the unique charm only Katelyn can bring us! There are some to-be-hits in it, such as the title song "Strictly Business" and "He's No You" but the others aren't bad at all! All the songs are great and her voice stands out in each of them. Katelyn delivers amazingly well written lyrics like a pro and catchy sassy fun songs. The question isn't if she'll be signed, the question is when.

Eurovision 2011: Switzerland's Entry: Anna Rossinelli: In Love for a While

Photobucket

Firstly, I must say that this is my favourite song overall and that it's actually my pick to win it all. Ok, since that is clear, let's go down to bussines! Swiss entry is selected by "Die grosse Entscheidungs Show", where 4 different channels chose entreies to compete on a national final of 12 acts. They perform and then the public votes. My views? It was a hell of a show!

Music Video: Katy Perry: E.T.

OMG! Miss Perry has gone the Gaga wierd route in her latest video! We all knew the song was strange but no one ever imagined it could go that crazy! It litteraly reached an extraterrestial whole new dimension! And I'm also loving it! "E.T." was released on February 16, 2011 and serves as her fourth single of her newest album "Teenage Dream". Now, it's her fourth #1 single of the album! A music video with Kanye West directed by Floria Sigismondi premiered on March 31, 2011 on MTV. I loved her latest video, "Firework", which was pretty and sweet, but this is so much better! The views are incredible, no that they are real but the whole outer space vibe is kewl! Katy is a hot alien too! Still, I hated Kanye's intervensions, or intrusions, which killed the song vibe, Katy doesn't need a rapper in her songs. And WTF with that ending? I loved the glass boxes with a pigeon skeleton and the sun glasses but the rest? Clueless! The white guy's ass and her gazelle legs? Totally blown away ...
