Interview: Habiba

If you think of a harpist, you probably picture an old lady in the corner of an orchestra performing a classical symphony with a bunch of much older musicians. Well, this is certainly not the case here! Habiba is not your typical harpist. Combining the harp with her folk soulish voice to make contemporary songs is genius. With a little more promotion and the release of her debut album coming, this one could be a hit and I hope it's one, we need more artists like Habiba nowadays.

I'M LOOKING FOR A DUTCH TRANSLATOR, IF INTRESETED, EMAIL ME

UPDATE: Pyke Pos is cut!! Sim'Ran was in the B2.

Last week, Ed Ruyer was cut in one of the most surprising boots of the season, given that he was a clear frontrunner and one of the favourites since his audition. The problem is that he wasn't delievering, while the other acts kept improving. Tonight, the top 5 will sing once more two songs each, on the Summer Jam theme. Who will be cut tonight? Will be the last girl, over or boy? Or will it be the second group leaving? ... It's time to face the music!

What's exactly the meaning of the phrase "Best for Last"? Well, basically to leave with a bang. But, why not starting with one? That's why we're starting with Case Mayfield, a Dutch indie folk musician which may be much more interesting that at first sight. Right now, Case is putting the final touches in his debut album, "The Many Colored Beast", which definitely won't dissapoint. He has a great concept going on and I wouldn't be surprised if his unique apporach takes the world by storm! He's a synesthetic and that only says one word to me, amazing!

After a tight battle the dutchs won over the swedes by one vote! Both countries certainly have great talent and I would have been glad to feature any of them, and given the amounts of votes the swedes and norwegians, who were 3rd, recived, I'm giving you the chance to vote for them again for the next theme! And I'm clarifying, it'll last until all artists are featured. But now, let's explore what Netherlands has to offer ...

The always amazing Lauren Pritchard, who was the 8th placer in the MDS Sound of 2011, is here once more with her new single, my personal favourite from her, the incredible "Stuck". The song was realeased on February 28, while the music video premiered ten days before. As expected, the video is really beautiful and show Lauren and her "boyfriend" escaping from prision apparently. Despite that, the song is really great and the video actually makes a lot of sense. She definitely one of my favourites this year, so anything she releases will be great for me but I'm confident this soulish song will impress you.

With a rather supernatural air, Maja breaks into big notes while walking through the woods with a microphone and several ninjas trying either to kill her for her amazing singing skills or for revealing their hiding spot. Eurovision 2011: Bulgaria's Entry: Poli Genova: Na inat

Having only made it to the final only once, where they came 5th, in six attempts, Eurovision is clrearly a deception among Blugarian watchers. So, they selected Poli Genova. She's been trying to represent the country for four years, so they thought, why not? Poli has a great voice, a cool look and will sing in our national language, let's pick her! Yeah, that's what they said. Now, Bulgaria is hoping they made the right decision. Will Poli make it to the final? Will she win? Fronted by Tim Schou, this indie rock band will certainly end their Eurovision run with a great position. With a really soft voice, the song lyrics are really easy to understand. It's actually impressive to see him performing, you'll never expect that voice looking at his face! He seems to be about to make sick rock shouts, instead, the song advances pleasantly with some moments in it, making it one of the best songs this year. Denmark's 3rd victory? Probably!

The infamous Jedward duo is here! Sadly, though, I can't say it was worth the wait. Jedward's "Lipstick" attempts to be funny in their typical, slapstick style, but the effect feels forced and ultimately is pretty short on the jokes, as is the video. Disappointing, really; it captures none of the magic that made them one of the most endearing guilty pleasures UK's X-Factor has seen. If this was going to be the end product, maybe Ireland should have tried to field an act with an actual shot of winning?

Eurovision 2011: Belarus's Entry: Anastasia Vinnikova: I Love Belarus

Photobucket

Considering the multinational affair that is Eurovision, it's actually somewhat surprising that more of the submitted songs actually aren't more frequently nationalist self-promotion pieces. That said, maybe it's because few of them actually turned out better than "I Love Belarus". The "up! with! Belarus!" anthem is an embarrassingly corny attempt at mixing post-disco with a traditional dulcimer. Things are helped little by a video which includes dancers who would feel kitschy and overdone on "It's A Small World", less than in a music video. Anastasia's voice is perfectly serviceable; it's a nice, husky instrument with some real power to boot.

But is that possible for her? No, it's not. She's got a great voice but the song is really cheesy and a typical love power ballad. I loved "Revolving", this is really good, the chorus is nice, but the lyrics seem a bit shallow.
