I'm currently looking for some new writers in order to expand the blog given that I can't post the amount of things I'd like to. So if you are interested in writing about anything related to music (news, TV shows, album reviews, introducing artists) just drop me an email to musicisthedoor@gmail.com and we can discuss some of your ideas.
X Factor UK 2012: Auditions 3

It wouldn't be The X Factor if an auditions show wasn't 55% random chat, 35% adverts and 10% singing. And whilst last week was more 64% Rubbish 35% Adverts and 1% Good singing, the show has managed to convince me to watch again this week as everyone's favourite grumpy Spice Girl Mel B rejoins the panel in Manchester for a third time and Anastacia travels to Glasgow to join the panel where she's hoping to find some incredible talent. So will we find the next big superstar or will we end up with the next tuneless wannabe who ends up on Celebrity Big Brother a few months later?
Recap and videos after the JUMP ...
Up first is 35-year-old Nicola Marie, she's very madcap and crazy, not dissimilar to Rylan last week and she appears to be a little bit overexcited by the whole experience. As soon as the judges talk to her, she answers their questions whilst laughing hysterically. And the performance starts. She's singing a dubstep remix of Taylor Darnes' 'Tell It To My Heart'. I absolutely love the song, it's quite a classic track but like last week with Rylan, I can't pretend that I'm a fan of dubstep remixes, I think it completely ruins the emotion and feel of the song though combined with the dance routine, it's strangely captivating, she reminds me of a more talented Goldie with her athletic moves and her splits, Nicola isn't a potential winner but she could be good for entertainment value to be honest. - VIDEO
Lifeguard Jake Quickenden is up next and we see another TOWIE inspired conversation as he talks to his mother and a girl who I'm assuming is either his sister or his girlfriend. That aside, he's up on stage as he announces his occupation to the delight of all the ladies in the audience, let's hope this guy isn't incredibly average or he will be another Eoghan/Lloyd/Frankie. He's singing 'Use Somebody' by Kings Of Leon which has been covered on the show about 7563 times already, not holding that against him, he's okay, his tone is a bit generic but his voice isn't bad and he's another boy who should at least get to the last stage of Bootcamp, whether he'll make Judge's Houses is another story, a solid audition but nothing amazing. - VIDEO
The acts shown in the next montage are probably all as good if not better than some of the acts that have been given full auditions. Taylor Breslin is perhaps the weakest of the three, his voice is okay but it's pretty generic and I've heard that song being sung better in the past. Jessica Beckett's voice is rather lovely, she has a very unique tone and there is a definite huskiness to it which makes me think of her as a slightly more controlled Amelia Lily. However, the standout of the montage is most definitely 19-year-old Matt Defreitas who performs an acoustic cover of 'Seven Nation Army' which is thankfully much better than the cover released by last year's runner-up Marcus Collins. - VIDEO
51-year-old Alison Brunton is the next auditionee to take her time in front of the judges. She's a single mum and she has her teenage son and teenage daughter with her today who are less than thrilled about her auditioning for the show. She compares herself to Madonna before taking to the stage when she starts into her rendition of 'The Edge Of Glory' by Lady Gaga. Unsurprisingly, her children had reason for concern as she's not a good singer, she completely wails her way through the song and even a little bum wriggle in the middle of the performance cannot take away from the fact that it was a really poor audition unfortunately. Everyone but Gary says No, Gary tells her that he would have said Yes (he's probably drunk or lying). Alison goes home without a place at bootcamp but with two slightly embarrassed children. - VIDEO
Sob Story Time! 26-year-old Joseph Whelan is the next act up, he tells us about his young son who he is auditioning for in the hope of getting a good life for him and his son. Joseph split with his little boy Kian's mother a little while ago so whilst he doesn't get to see him all the time, he hopes that if he wins the show that he will be able to give his son a better life. Sob story over, Josephis through to bootcamp has to face the judges now. He's singing 'Whole Lotta Love' by Led Zeppelin and he definitely has the vocals for the song but for me at least, it's nothing special, of all the renditions of that song I have heard, he's no better than anyone else at the song and it just strikes me as a particularly good karaoke rendition of the song with Joseph being a good if slightly one-dimensional rock singer. Joseph gets rave reviews from the judges and unsurprisingly he goes through to bootcamp with a full house of Yeses. I liked his audition but it wasn't amazing. - VIDEO
We're up across the border in Scotland now. Ach aye, the Glasgow auditions are hopefully going to offer us lots of talent. The judges are down a Spice Girl but they have 00's popstar Anastacia in her place, Anastacia is hopeful that she will get to see lots of incredible talent in Glasgow. As if by magic, we see a montage of some of the Glasgow 'talent', yep you guessed it they're all terrible and the judges are seen bemoaning the fact that there is no talent in Scotland commenting that they hope that someone makes their journey worthwhile.
Oh wow, purely coincidentally and definitely not due to editing, the judges' prayers seem to be answered by our next auditionee. Mother of two (presumably one of said children is Janet Devlin) and part-time fairy Melanie Masson. The 44-year-old runs an Under 5's music group called Fairy Flutterby's Little Rockabyes, that's a mouthful. Melanie reveals that she's mainly known to children in her area as Fairy Flutterby, Peter Dickson would have a field day if she was to go under that name during the show! Melanie is singing 'Cry Baby' by Janis Joplin today, a song that I absolutely love by a fantastic and sadly missed singer. Wow, Melanie has an incredible vocal range, probably the best vocal range in terms of rock singers since Ruth Lorenzo in Series 5. I'm really excited to see what else Melanie can do in the competition, the Overs category just got exciting! - VIDEO
