The Voice US: Season 4: The Live Finals: Top 5 Perform: The Semi-Final

We said goodbye to country singer Holly Tucker last week, with Blake losing his first act since the live finals started. Now his team is down to two, The Swon Brothers and Danielle Bradbery. The rest of the coaches have one, Sasha Allen is Shakira's last hope, Amber Carrington is Adam's and Michelle Chamuel is Usher's. Tonight, the semi finalists will perform two songs each, one chosen by them as a special dedication and the other picked by their coaches. Since we only lost an act last week, we'll have a double elimination on tonight's live show. That also means that at least one coach will be left out of the finale, who'll it be? ... This is The Voice!

Recap and videos after the jump ...
The Swon Brothers
"Turn the Page" - Team Blake - 8/10 - They are dedicating their song to all the band members that have played in the past with them and the guys who currently play with them now. Hey, that was a short intro! Way to make my job easier! This is pretty great, at least it sounds really different from what they've been doing in previous weeks. It's got a grittier and darker sound and if it wasn't for young Swon's stupid jumping, this would have been a perfect performance. Their vocals, specially Zach's, were surprisingly phenomenal. It's my fave from them indeed. "I'm working on my Swon salute (he tells them while doing some weird dove-like hand movement). It's really cool to pay reverence to the people you play music with, I really appreciate that. Another great performance, it's always good with you guys" (Adam)
Sasha Allen
"I Will Always Love You" - Team Shakira - 6,5/10 - She's obviously singing this song for her children. "The true meaning of this song, I think it's about unconditional love and that's why I dedicate it to my children. I miss you so much and yes, I will always love you" Sasha says. A cute performance for her children but as a performance to earn her votes, I don't see it. It's a big song but it's a boring one and that combined with the smoke, the harp and the wind machine made this the perfect performance for a quick nap. Sasha should have stuck to her RnB guns, this is doing her no favour despite she sang it well. "In singing a Whitney Houston song of course you can't sing it without considering the incredible vocalist that she is, was and will always be and the meaning behind this, there's not greater love than the love for your children. You really did an amazing job" (Usher)
Michelle Chamuel
"Clarity" - Team Usher - 9/10 - She flew home to Amherst this week. She had no idea all that people would be waiting for her in the house. Her family's got a surprise for her, her former band mate from Ella Riot. She also goes to visit the cafe were she used to work, the Woodstar Cafe. There's a bunch of people there. "You electrify us, week in and week out, we are so happy for you" the owner tells her. Her home visit ends with a"God Bless America" performance during the Red Sox's game. I never heard this song before but she completely sold that performance to me. She's such an incredible performer, and I feel like I'm repeating myself every week, but she just gives it her all every time she sings. This was no exception, also, this was the ideal pick for her, showing her alternative/indie self. "It's always solid and I'm always amazed at how dramatic you can be, you can be a soft vocalist and then the power, the squatting, all of those things that you can do" (Blake)
Danielle Bradbery
"Please Remember Me" - Team Blake - 7,5/10 - She heads back home to Houston. She's really excited to be back with her family. Her cousins are her #1 fans. Next stop is Cypress Ranch High School, which has basically all the school cheering for her. She's overwhelmed and performs "Mean" for them. She finally gets to sing the National Anthem for the Houston Astros game. This is a typical Danielle performance. It's pretty as usual but I'm getting a bit tired of her non-risk taking. Lovely though, she just can do no wrong. She's the one safe bet for the final. "Let me start by telling you why I wanted you to do that song, we all remember from the blind auditions the thing that impressed me so much was the fact that you landed on a note and you just stayed there, perfect pitch, it's unbelievable. And that song you just heard every vowel, she can hold that for a long time. You don't have any weaknesses in your singing" (Blake)
Amber Carrington
"Firework" - Team Adam - 7/10 - She's dedicating this song to her best friends. As Katy previously said, this is a really hard song to sing. The range itself is crazy. The performance is ok overall, her lower register is a bit weak and the song doesn't get going until she hits the first big note. Out of the million of songs out there, this wasn't the wisest song to sing this week. She had to destroy it, yet she barely did it justice. I love Amber and her effortless ability to sing anything but this just wasn't strong enough. "I think Adam's gonna have to add this song to his list of nightmare songs because this one is really tough but you did good, you are great, I'm a fan and we all know that you've a great voice" (Shakira)
The Swon Brothers
"Danny's Song" - Team Blake - 6,5/10 - The brothers returned to Muskogee this week. All their family and friends are there to welcome them. "They'll always be my babies and it makes me so happy to see them accomplish what they say they always wanted to do" their mom says. They have a stop at the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame were they used to work. They award them the Rising Star Award, which Blake won years earlier. Vince Gill congratulates them via video. There was a lot of people in the street supporting them. They are dedicating June 9 to June 13 as The Swon Brothers weekend. They end their visit with a performance of the boring "Okie from Muskogee" to a full house. This is more what I expected from them, after all, Blake hasn't taken a single risk with his team this year. A country song, which will probably earn them a ton of votes, given the emotional tone of this song. They are good vocalists but as they've proved every week, they've no diversity. "It was unbelievable, it was perfect. You guys are gonna look back, years from now, at the pivotal weeks, pivotal moments in your life, and one of the biggest things you are gonna talk about is being on The Voice. And when you talk about it you're gonna talk about tonight, being the biggest night that you had on The Voice" (Blake)
Sasha Allen
"Bad Girls" - Team Shakira - 6/10 - Sasha took a plane to NYC, her hometown. She just can't wait to see her family. She's surprising her daughter Sierra after school. A cute family reunion. It's difficult for her to be away from her family. She visits a radio station to promote her concert at the Village Underground. Her visit ends with an "At Last" cover, in the place she used to sing back in her college days. Wow! If you thought Mel Blatt was a terrible coach on The X Factor NZ, just take a look at Shakira here. This is by far the worst choice she's made. A disco song for an RnB singer the week she needs the votes the most? Not even her sassy powerful delivery could save that performance. Our Broadway vet better start saying her goodbyes. "That was so much fan. Donna Summer was one of my first musical idols, actually that record was the first record I ever got and I thank you so much for bringing her spirit alive. I feel like you started in this competition as a voice but we didn't have a clue how great of a performer you could turn into" (Shakira)
Danielle Bradbery
"Who I Am" - Team Blake - 8,5/10 - She dedicates the song to her best friend Haley and her parents. There's a cheesy photo album behind her on the screen. This is better than her first song, probably because it's her own pick. She performs it beautifully, is actually one of her best deliveries. There's an obvious connection with this lyrics and it's really gorgeous. She ends the song standing besides her family and with a big hug to her parents. "You are such a little star. I feel like soon I'll be able to say, 'you know, I knew her when she was 16, I knew her when she was on The Voice'" (Shakira)
Amber Carrington
"Sad" - Team Adam - 10/10 - She heads to Dallas to see her family. All her family is there for her. "Do you like Adam being your coach?" one of her sis asks her. Of course she loves him as her coach. She goes for a radio visit, to the radio she has listened since she was a kid. Next there's a visit to the boutique she used to work at. Then her visit continues at the Rodeo City Music Hall, where she used to perform when she was 10 y/o. She found about her mom passing away at that place and it was good for her being around the people that she loves. Amber is given the key to the city and June 6 is proclaimed as her day. The visit ends with a concert at the harbor. Adam gave Amber his own song and it's a perfect pick for her. It starts a bit wobbly but it soon recovers. Her phrasing is just gorgeous and so is her tone, very rich and able to translate emotions perfectly. It's the best performance so far. "We wrote that song one day, it took about 20 minutes to write it and we recorded it right away. The fact that you sang it better than I did and did it such justice makes me so happy" (Adam)
"Time After Time" - Team Usher - 8/10 - Michelle dedicates her song to her coach, Usher, and his "incredible" team. "Usher, you've become like family to me, you are someone I look up to. You've allowed me to be who I am, time after time you've been there for me" she says. To be honest, I preferred her first performance. This one wasn't as dynamic, at least until the clock shattered. Her phrasing was really great though and her voice is always impressive. She never disappoints. I really hope to see her in next week's final. "Thank you so much for dedicating that song to me. My god, you are the winner. You are medicine for the whole world, I love you" (Usher)

After that disco number, Sasha's elimination was a no brainier. Shakira deserved it after all since she's been the worst coach. On the contrary, Adam did not. He was by far the best coach this season, giving his acts unexpected songs and his team delivering some impressive performances, like Amber's "Sad" just yesterday, which was the night's best performance. It's a shame to see her go since she really had lots of potential. Hopefully Adam will keep working with her and we'll get a phenomenal debut from the young singer.
